Opportunity Description:

Hematologist or Hematologist-Oncologist

VA Boston Healthcare System – Boston, MA

The Hematology-Oncology Section at VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS) invites applications for a full-time hematologist or hematologist-oncologist to develop a research program while providing excellent patient care and teaching in both benign and malignant hematology. The successful candidate should be eligible for appointment as Instructor or Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School (HMS) or Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM).

The Hematology-Oncology Section serves patients across the spectrum of inpatient and outpatient care and is a major training site for fellows from BUSM-affiliated programs.  The Section’s faculty conducts basic, clinical and translational research in coagulation, multiple myeloma, and point-of-care precision oncology. Additional valuable resources include access to a large VA biorepository based at VABHS and the VA clinical trials network.

VABHS is the major tertiary referral center for Veterans from throughout New England and is strongly affiliated with HMS and BUSM. The System comprises three major campuses and five community-based outpatient clinics. VABHS is the largest recipient of VA intramural research funds and ranks among the top VA facilities in total research funding.

The position requires US citizenship, M.D. with licensure, and Board Certification in hematology and/or medical oncology. A strong background in research and academics is preferred.  For more details, Email your full CV to Don Rainwater, National Healthcare Recruitment Consultant, VA New England Healthcare System at don.rainwater@va.gov.  Your inquiry will be handled confidentially.

Whether you're interested in academics, research, or a better work/life balance, you'll find the VA has a lot to offer, including the unmatched satisfaction you'll get from caring for those who have served our country. In addition to competitive pay and liability protection, the VA also offers a robust benefits plan that includes:

Paid Time Off:

  • 26 days paid annual (vacation/personal) leave – you can carry over up to 86 days into a new year
  • 13 days paid sick leave per year with unlimited carry over! Unused sick leave can be used to extend creditable service time at retirement!
  • 10 Paid federal holidays with pay
  • Possible 5 Days paid Authorized Absence to attend CME

Insurance:

  • Health Insurance: VA employees have an outstanding number of health insurance plans from which to choose (premiums are partially paid by VA)
  • Dental & Vision: Our insurance options also include exceptional vision and dental plans (premiums are partially paid by VA)
  • VA employees have the option to use Flexible Spending Accounts, which allow you to use tax-free dollars to pay for medical, dental, and vision care expenses that are not reimbursed by your health insurance plan
  • Term life insurance, family, and additional coverage options are available with the cost shared by the Federal Government.
  • Long-term care insurance is available as an option

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits; 2) FERS-FRAE basic benefits (pension); and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees hired after January 1, 2014 automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 8.3% of the employee's salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 12.7% of the employee's salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2016, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $18,000, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $24,000
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years' service

Community Description:

Boston is the capital and most populous city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. Boston is also the seat of Suffolk County, although the county government was disbanded on July 1, 1999.  The city proper covers 48 square miles (124 km2) with an estimated population of 667,137 in 2015,  making it the largest city in New England and the 23rd most populous city in the United States.  The city is the economic and cultural anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area known as Greater Boston, a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) home to a census-estimated 4.7 million people in 2014 and ranking as the tenth-largest such area in the country.  Alternately, as a Combined Statistical Area (CSA), this wider commuting region is home to some 8.1 million people, making it the sixth-largest as such in the United States.

One of the oldest cities in the United States, Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers from England. It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. Upon U.S. independence from Great Britain, it continued to be an important port and manufacturing hub as well as a center for education and culture.  Through land reclamation and municipal annexation, Boston has expanded beyond the original peninsula. Its rich history attracts many tourists, with Faneuil Hall alone drawing over 20 million visitors per year.  Boston's many firsts include the United States' first public school, Boston Latin School (1635), first subway system, the Tremont Street Subway (1897), and first public park, Boston Common (1634).

The area's many colleges and universities make Boston an international center of higher education, including law, medicine, engineering, and business, and the city is considered to be a world leader in innovation and entrepreneurship with nearly 2,000 startups.  Boston's economic base also includes finance, professional and business services, biotechnology, information technology, and government activities.  Households in the city claim the highest average rate of philanthropy in the United States; businesses and institutions rank among the top in the country for environmental sustainability and investment.  The city has one of the highest costs of living in the United States as it has undergone gentrification, though it remains high on world livability rankings.
