Chief of Surgery Position Available

You are invited to consider the role of leading the department of surgery and providing services to our veterans at the Manchester VA Medical Center. The surgery service line includes general surgery and includes the Day Surgery Program (VHA Ambulatory-Basic Operative Complexity Level) with three operating rooms, anesthesia service, and a growing multidisciplinary pain program.
We are seeking a creative, experienced, dynamic physician leader with strong administrative, interpersonal and organizational skills for the full-time position of Chief of Surgery. As a key member of the clinical leadership team, you will be responsible for delivery of surgical services to over 25,000 veterans at the medical center and serve as a medical center representative to a vibrant regional surgical service line with colleagues and support throughout the six New England states.
As Chief, you will participate in activities designated to meet all relevant requirements, including those of the Joint Commission and other accredited agencies. This is a management position with responsibility for all aspects of delivery of care for the department. Administrative functions may include evaluation and approval / disapproval of clinical consultative services for non-VA care, which are shared by the Chief of Staff.
You will be responsible for the overall performance of the Surgery Service Line and be expected to practice in his/her discipline to maintain clinical proficiency as determined by the Chief of Staff and you will be a key member of the clinical leadership team and report directly to the Chief of Staff.
Other responsibilities will include ensuring that high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner and include the complete range of resource management such as position management and budgeting. You should possess excellent leadership skills and be knowledgeable and proficient with performance measures and the principles of system redesign, including implementation and promotion of outpatient clinic access and hospital flow.
You should have an unrestricted license (any state), be board certified in general surgery and have a strong history in promoting an effective mix, coordination and support of clinical care by evaluating current and potential patient needs, clinical workload and resources, and special programs/mandates. You’ll promote and evaluate standards of clinical competence and conduct for staff and monitor and evaluate clinical practice, peer review, and other appropriate quality assurance activities.
Your hours will typically be M-F 8am-4pm. There is no call schedule for surgery but you will be asked to be available during the work week and for after-hours duties including nights, weekends, and holidays. As a VA physician you’ll enjoy 11 federal holidays and also receive nearly 6 weeks of paid annual leave and be eligible to participate in a pension program as well as a matching Thrift Savings Plan which is similar to a 401K and a host of other benefits difficult to find in the private sector. Candidates with prior military experience may be able to combine their accrued military retirement credit with VA pension benefits.
