Portland VA Medical Center
Visas Accepted:None
Specialty:Palliative Medicine
Opportunity Description:

The Department of Veterans Affairs Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) is recruiting for a board-certified palliative medicine physician with a track record of clinical and educational experience in palliative care.  VAPORHCS is the number one growing level 1A tertiary VA Hospital in the Nation.   VAPORHCS consists of the main tertiary care medical center overlooking the city of Portland, the Vancouver Campus in Vancouver, WA, and nine outpatient clinics across Central and Northwest Oregon. VAPORHCS provides a full continuum of inpatient, outpatient, long-term, and emergent care, serving nearly 90,000 veterans annually.   VAPORHCS is proud to host 12 national-level Centers of Excellence that lead research efforts across a wide spectrum of medical specialties

The selected candidate would be joining a well-established Palliative Care Consult Team, which is truly interdisciplinary in its composition.  As a clinician-educator, duties would include providing clinical services to hospitalized and clinic patients, as well as providing didactic and bedside teaching to palliative medicine fellows and other trainees who rotate with the consult team.  There are opportunities to conduct or oversee quality improvement projects related to the consult team or end of life care in this system. VA palliative medicine physicians receive an academic appointment commensurate with qualification at Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU), that requires the provider successfully maintain board certification in internal medicine or family medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.  In addition to the role as clinician, the Clinician-Educator is encouraged to have either major administrative responsibilities for an educational or clinical program or a record of continuous productivity in research as documented by publications in peer reviewed journals.

VAPORHCS has a close relationship with our academic affiliate, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), to which it is physically connected by a sky bridge.  VAPORHCS is one of only six VA health care systems to have an Inter-professional Fellowship Program in Palliative Care. Professionals from the disciplines of chaplaincy, medicine, psychology, social work are trained in our fellowship program each year.  VAPORHCS has a robust research program, with over $32 million in grant funding.  VAPORHCS is a leader in high quality, cost effective clinical care, having been recently recognized as among the best by CMS Hospital Compare, recipient of a 2013 Joint Commission Top Performer Award on Key Quality Measures and a 2013 National Center for Patient Safety Cornerstone Silver Level Award.   VAPORHCS is also a Magnet Recognition Program Facility.

Our employees enjoy the most progressive benefits packages available, which includes liberal vacation leave, sick leave, military leave, paid holidays, health and life insurance, Thrift Savings Plan (401K), flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts and much more!
